Glossop

I stepped away from the coach and took in the bustling street before me. The foliage and trees dotting the area lent Glossop a picturesque appearance.

Georgiana appeared at my side. “What do you think of the place?”

“It looks like a delightful town.”

Miss Powell approached us. “Miss Darcy, would you mind joining your aunt and cousin?” She pointed ahead to where Lady Matlock and Lady Berkeley—or rather Emma—walked together. “I should like a word with your sister in private.”

A pinched expression briefly marred Georgiana’s countenance before she replaced it with a smile. “Of course, excuse me.” She strode away to catch up with the other two ladies.

With her brows knitted, Miss Powell glanced at Georgiana. “I am afraid your sister did not appreciate my request.” She took my arm, and we followed the others at a slow pace. “I hope you will excuse my impertinence, but after Darcy’s overbearing statements at dinner last night, I became offended on your behalf. If you wish to speak about that or anything else, I am happy to provide a sympathetic ear.”

I sucked in my breath. Miss Powell’s presumption aside, Fitzwilliam had garnered the attention of everyone at the dinner table. “I appreciate your concern, but my husband and I discussed the matter to our mutual satisfaction.”

Miss Powell lifted a hand to her chest. “I am relieved to hear it. Then you will ride in the hunt after all?”

“No, I shall not.”

“Oh.” Miss Powell's mouth flattened. “I had hoped we could ride the course together. Well, no matter, we may ride together another time.”

“I should like that.”

The others entered a haberdasher’s shop. Miss Powell halted before we reached the door and turned to me. “I want to say something that might set your mind at ease.”

“Oh?”

“In your place, I should wonder if my husband’s long-time female friend had ever developed romantic feelings for him. After all, Darcy is now and was then attractive, intelligent, and honourable.”

“The thought has crossed my mind.” My expression took on a sheepish quality.

“Darcy has always been a friend, and I have never wanted anything more.”

I released the breath I had been holding. “I am glad to hear it.”

“Then it is well that I cleared the air.”
